Japanese Antique Okinawa Ryukyu Dolls Man Woman Ningyo Beautiful Details MINT
This is a pair of Dolls I am selling for a friend who brought these with her from her native Okinawa to the US when she arrived in the 1970s. Most likely as to materials and workmanship I would date these earlier, 1940s to 1950s possibly. Legs are stuffed with hard excelsior (wood shaving), shoes are rubber slippers, fabrics are close to mid century style and coloring.
She is a gorgeous woman with an updo of silk thread hair with a gold ornament. He either represents a Samurai, Shogun or just a male I am not sure but he has a sword. Wonderful face painting and individual fingers.
These dolls are later versions of centuries old Japanese Hina Matsuri (Girls Day) dolls/Ningyo.
Beautifully painted facial details, individual fingers, a stockinette type material for heads and hands. No issues. Both on a tatami style matt stand, with RYUKYU DOLL in kanji on front.
Meant to be a couple, selling as a pair.
Her layers of fabric in the kimono visible in the sleeves is truly stunning.
